Start with the actual change
Replacing a distribution panel, adding a feeder and increasing an incoming service can involve different approvals. Give the contractor the property address, existing service records and proposed equipment list. The design should identify the work at the panel, meter, service conductors and utility connection separately.
A complete scope names the permit holder and identifies who makes each utility request. Homeowner electrical permits in Calgary do not authorize installing, altering or modifying the main electrical service, main panel, main breaker or meter base.

City permission and utility feasibility answer different questions
The City reviews the permitted installation. ENMAX Power reviews changes to its connection and infrastructure where it is the serving distribution utility. Calgary specifically notes that an ENMAX review during development-permit circulation does not confirm that the proposed electrical capacity is available.
For ENMAX project intake, prepare the proposed amps and volts, service details and site plan. Its published intake requirements call for a single-line diagram for all commercial services and residential services above 200A. Confirm the exact requirements for your project with the utility.

Put the outage sequence in writing
Before equipment is ordered, establish the isolation, installation, inspection and reconnection sequence. ENMAX’s disconnect/reconnect guidance explains that a permit, completed inspection or City authorization may be required before reconnection. Equipment installation is only one part of the schedule.
- Contractor: design, permit application and installation scope.
- City: applicable inspection and authorization requirements.
- Utility: connection feasibility, utility isolation and reconnection conditions.
- Owner: access, notification, essential loads and retained closeout records.

Keep a usable project record
Ask for the final circuit directory, permit information, inspection record, load calculation and utility correspondence that applies to the work. Retain the approved configuration with the property records so future EV, suite or commercial equipment planning starts with evidence.
