When to assess or upgrade your panel

An immediate electrical danger, a symptom requiring assessment and a planned capacity change need different responses. A website cannot diagnose a panel or declare it safe to wait.

Fire, smoke, sparks or electric shock: leave the area

Move away from the hazard. Do not approach, open or touch the panel or try to operate its main breaker. Call 911 from a safe location. Do not wait for this site's quote form or a reply to an inquiry. Follow emergency responders' directions.

For a downed line, keep clear and report it to the serving utility as well as emergency services. ENMAX outages and safety is a Calgary-area reference; verify the utility for your address.

    01 / Assessment

Symptoms are evidence, not a diagnosis.

These observations call for a qualified assessment, not a self-directed safety verdict or an automatic panel replacement. Active danger takes precedence over the planning steps below.

    Repeated breaker trips

Record which circuit is affected and which equipment was operating. A trip can have several causes; frequency alone cannot establish whether the circuit, breaker, panel or service needs work. Have a qualified electrical professional investigate rather than repeatedly resetting it.

    Flickering or dimming lights

Note when and where the change occurs, including whether a particular appliance is starting. Supply conditions, connections and individual circuits can all be involved. A qualified assessment is needed before attributing it to panel capacity.

    Heat, odour or visible damage

Do not touch a warm or damaged enclosure to test it. If there is smoke, fire, sparks, shock or an apparent active burning condition, leave the area and call 911 from safety. For other concerning observations, arrange professional assessment without opening the equipment yourself.

    A breaker will not reset

Do not force it or attempt internal repairs. The affected circuit and connected equipment need professional investigation; replacing the whole panel is not an automatic conclusion.

    02 / Project planning

Identify the constraint before choosing equipment.

    Condition or repair

Ask for documented observations, equipment identification and the limits of the assessment. An older label or a fuse box is not, on its own, a diagnosis of condition.

    More circuit positions

A full distribution panel can be a space constraint. Ask whether a compatible subpanel and feeder can serve the new circuits; that does not increase incoming service capacity.

    More electrical demand

List the nameplates for EV charging, heat pumps, suites and workshop equipment. Have a qualified person prepare a load calculation and compare a circuit-only solution, listed load management and a service change where appropriate.

    Insurance or purchase

Request the insurer's or buyer's requirements in writing: equipment, deadline and acceptable condition, permit or inspection records. No site-wide age cutoff or replacement promises coverage.

Before approving work, establish the permit authority and distribution utility for the property address, who holds the permit, and who coordinates isolation, inspection and reconnection.

Condition, compatibility and the next decision

Calgary electrical permitting and ENMAX connection requirements are separate. A new enclosure does not confirm a larger approved supply. Keep the load calculation, permit scope and utility response together.

Calgary homeowner permits exclude changes to the main electrical service, main panel, main breaker and meter base. Have the electrical contractor confirm the applicable permit and inspection sequence, and utility isolation or service review where required.
