Start with the suite’s equipment
List cooking, laundry, space heating, ventilation and other proposed loads alongside the existing home’s equipment. The combined demand should be assessed before the suite is treated as an isolated panel project. Keep equipment details consistent with the building and electrical permit drawings.
Calgary’s published suite guidance directs owners to its secondary-suite load calculation information and tells contractors to contact ENMAX when the main service must be increased. The contractor should confirm the current forms and submission sequence.

Circuits, access and metering are separate decisions
The City notes that a common panel can serve both suites if branch circuits are not shared between them. Its guidance recommends a common accessible location or access for each tenant. Have the contractor address the actual layout, circuit identification and applicable requirements.
A suite subpanel is a distribution choice. It is not proof of a separately metered utility service. If separate metering is requested, review the utility connection, ownership and approval scope as a distinct part of the project.

Plan before walls close
Coordinate feeder paths, panel access, fire separations and inspection access with the renovation team. Clearly identify what is existing, altered and new. Confirm the permit holder’s inspection sequence and any unfinished areas needed for review.

Ask for the permit and inspection records, final circuit schedule and documentation of the service arrangement. If the suite is also driving an EV, heat-pump or garage project, include those loads in the wider plan rather than making three disconnected decisions.

The proposed equipment and accepted load calculation determine the need. A suite does not establish a universal service size.
Does a suite subpanel mean separate utility billing?
