The short answer
A restaurant or retail panel upgrade in Calgary should use the actual equipment schedule and existing building supply. Assess demand, voltage and phase, tenant boundaries, metering, permits and operational shutdown needs before deciding on panel replacement or a service increase.
01 / Project knowledge
Equipment changes can drive the scope
A new cooking line, refrigeration system, HVAC unit or illuminated signage can change distribution and demand. Supply the electrical designer with the equipment schedules and manufacturer requirements before the fit-out layout is finalized. Include the existing equipment that will continue operating.
For retail, separate display and lighting changes from larger fixed loads. For restaurants, coordinate the electrical information with mechanical, food-service and building drawings. The building’s existing panel label is not confirmation that the full new operation fits.
02 / Project knowledge
Match the tenancy to the upstream service
Record landlord access, the tenant feeder and meter arrangement. A panelboard inside the unit can be limited by the building distribution or incoming supply. If an ENMAX connection modification is proposed, its commercial project intake needs a single-line diagram and service details.
03 / Project knowledge
Permits and opening dates
Calgary commercial alterations may need building and trade approvals depending on the scope and use. Confirm the work with the City and project team. Keep inspection and energization milestones separate from the business opening date; a contractor’s panel installation estimate is not a promise of final approval.
04 / Project knowledge
Protect operations through a planned outage
For an operating business, identify refrigeration, payments, security, network equipment and other essential systems with the responsible people. Agree shutdown, food-storage or operational contingency and restart responsibilities. Have qualified professionals design any temporary power arrangement.
- Equipment nameplates and final layout.
- Voltage, phase, feeder and metering records.
- Landlord and adjacent-tenant coordination.
- Building and electrical permit responsibilities.
- Outage, inspection and restart contacts.
Questions we hear
Does adding electric cooking always require a service upgrade?
Not automatically. The equipment load, existing distribution and accepted demand assessment determine the needed changes.
Can the panel work happen after closing?
Ask the contractor and utility to confirm the full shutdown and reconnection sequence. After-hours options and costs are project-specific.
